Dominating the 42nd Grammy Awards on Wednesday night, Mexican-born guitarist Carlos Santana took home an astounding eight trophies, earning his first Grammys in 13 years.

Santana Sweeps Grammy Awards
In a truly "Supernatural" performance, Carlos Santana took home a record-tying eight awards at Wednesday night's Grammy Awards ceremony. Having received trophies for Record of the Year, Best Rock Album, Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal, and many others, Santana accepted the evening's final award for Album of the Year from presenters Lauryn Hill and Bob Dylan. Taking the stage with Santana to accept the trophy was Arista chief Clive Davis, the man responsible for the guitarist's astounding comeback.
The eight Grammy awards ties a record for most Grammys won by an artist in a single year . Michael Jackson accomplished the same feat in 1983 with his album "Thriller".
In addition to the eight Grammys presented directly to Santana for the album "Supernatural", the Song of the Year trophy was awarded to Rob Thomas/Itaal Shur of Matchbox 20, for penning the album's smash single "Smooth".

Long Time Between Grammys
Carlos Santana had been nominated for Grammy Awards five times previously, dating back to 1973. But the 52 year old Mexican-born guitarist had only ever brought home the award once. In 1987, Santana's Blues for Salvador (a song he'd written about his son) won a Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
